USB flash drives are quite often employed to replace the floppy drives of yesteryear, and to prevent the inconvenience of burning CDs frequently. The flash memory USB drives are sized much smaller, have much quicker read and write speeds, and are infinitely more durable because of the lack of moving parts. Until around 2006, most desktop and laptop computers came standard with floppy drives; nowadays, they are abandoned in favor of USB ports and flash memory readers.

Sizes

USB flash memory comes in commonly-sold sizes such as 128MB, 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB, but it can be purchased in even higher capacities. Currently, it’s possible to find sizes as high as 256GB, although capacities at that level are still quite expensive.

Applications

In addition to the obvious use of storing files, there are other uses for flash memory USB drives that are gaining popularity. Some system administrators use USB flash drives to carry commonly-used spyware or virus-scan programs. This helps prevent the need to hook up the infected machine to the network, potentially causing other infected machines.

Some companies have also taken to having promotional USB drives made. Usually, these have product catalogs in PDF or other electronic formats, or sample and trial software. It is just as cost-effective and usually easier to employ this method versus having CDs or DVDs replicated and packaging designed. Another unique idea that promotional USB drives are used for is music promotion and distribution. Many artists (both indie and major-label) have distributed albums or special recordings on flash memory USB drives. Some companies also make promotional USB flash pens that serve a dual purpose.

Disadvantages

Like any consumer product, there are a few disadvantages. USB memory can sustain only a certain number of reads/writes before failure. This is commonplace among any kind of media, however. Also, because of the typically small size, it’s easy to misplace or lose the USB drives. This isn’t necessarily the fault of the product, but is a drawback none the less. Lastly, although the drives are extremely cheap compared to even months ago, the price per unit is still much higher than a typical computer hard drive in larger capacities. Still yet, if you need a smaller capacity, the USB flash drive is still more cost-effective.

USB Flash Pen

It has been a long time since computer users have used floppy disks to save data and transport it to another machine. There have now been advancements in technology that allow a user to not only email all the data necessary, but to also save up to 256 GB of data in a flash drive the size of a pen. The USB flash pen is a removable data memory storage device that communicates to any device with a USB port.

These flash drives are removable and rewritable. For those who do not understand computer tech lingo, they can save data from various computers all in this single device and you can erase documents that are no longer needed and replace them with others. These drives are smaller, faster and have nearly a thousand times larger capacity then its ancestor the floppy disk. They are also much more reliable and durable. In 2005, the floppy disk drive has pretty much ceased to exist in new laptops, and is expected to be phased out in desktops as well. USB ports will now be the new “disk drive”.

The pen USB flash drive is supported by modern day operating systems such as Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. The 2.0 USB drives can even be read by the PlayStation 3 and other PDA products.

USB flash drives have made life even easier. From taking your school report with you to school to saving and printing pictures at a printing studio, the limits are endless with this advancement.

USB Flash Memory

One the most widely used inventions of the past 20 years are the ubiquitous USB Flash Memory sticks. Variously known as Jump Drives, Thumb Drives, Memory Sticks, and many other names, these portable memory devices are to be found everywhere.

The most common use is with PC’s and Laptops for storing and transferring files, and they are not only to be found in the Computer Science or Engineering departments. There are probably very few college students today, regardless of their major, that do not own at least one such device.

Memory USB cards using the same technology are also widely used in digital cameras. The large capacity is what allows hundreds of pictures to be stored before it is necessary to download the images and clear the memory.

Another very popular use for memory USB drives is as a give-away at trade shows. Promotional flash drives are a welcome and useful item, and much more functional than an emblazoned key chain or desk calendar. Additionally, some people have taken to storing often-used programs on them for use at public or borrow computers. There are many programs designed to be used on USB flash drives.

This product has seen an explosion in capacity and a great reduction in price in recent years. When they were first introduced in the late 1980’s flash drives could only store a few megabytes of data, and that data came with a respectable price tag. It is now quite common to find devices with 16 gigabytes of memory for under $80.

It is a key component of the popular MP3 players, as well as cellular phones, ATM’s, and just about any device that uses upgradeable software, known as firmware.

Look for there to be more uses for this type of memory in the near future. As the reliability increases and cost decreases, they may replace hard drives in some applications.

Custom USB Flash Drives

Branding is very important for any company. No wonder everything from stationary to official vehicles are seen in the official livery with prominent logos. Not only does it help create an identity for a company, it is useful in promotion as well. Portable memory devices are the latest entrant in the world of branding. Custom flash drives or pen drives are in a high demand for promotional purposes. Companies use these pen drives as a means of marketing their services or products.

The portable memory usb drives are often required for fast data transfer from one computer to another or for backup purposes. These are very popular among business professionals as well as students. Any computer with a USB port can retrieve data from a flash drive. Such a portable drive with a company logo gives that company a lot of exposure.

Many companies use events such as trade shows to promote their products or services. Branding assumes a very high importance at such events. Even the most prominent banner stand is not enough to promote the products. At such events, a branded flash drive can bring a lot of exposure to any company. Giving away these branded devices containing presentations regarding the company’s products or services can be a very effective means of promotion.

Thus usb flash drives have become an important part of any promotional campaign. These will not only serve as advertisements for the company but also will provide the facility of data transfer and backup to the people these are given away to.
